I am very pleased with the affordability of this instrument (I have wanted an instrument with the capability of Maynard Furgeson's design for decades). I am enjoying learning the valve positions, but disappointed that a tuning slide was dented. I chose the option of receiving a reduction in price rather than returning the whole instrument. However, I preferred a third option that was declined by the company, a replacement of the tuning slide.

Wow - it's fantastic to have a trombone with both slide and valves, as each has its benefits to expressivity! Aside from Holton, who have ceased manufacture, Wessex is the only company I know of who make a Superbone, and the instrument is relatively affordable to those of us on a moderate budget. I appreciated Wessex' personal communication, and willingness to customise the finish of my instrument to lacquer-free, rather than lacquered or silver-plated, to match my other instruments. My instrument arrived with a slight dent in one of the tubes due to damage during international custom inspection, and Wessex offered a 10% discount, and to pay for the repairs. The valves are taking a little wearing in, like any new brass instrument! I would recommend Wessex for their communication and flexibility. Generally, I appreciate that Wessex makes a range of unusual brass instruments to fill all sorts of musical niches, high quality mid-range instruments at a reasonable price. Now all I hope for is that Wessex will start manufacturing a version of the Holton Firebird Trumpet, and all my musical instrument desires will be achieved! Thank-you Wessex!

I'm not a trombone player. My first instrument of choice is tuba. And I've ordered and play two Wessex tubas. One is the Luzern. I LOVE my Luzern. And the other I sold to pay for the Luzern. A Tornister tuba. I played it in Jazz Band. The only other reason I sold it (besides to help pay for the Luzern) is ergonomics. It was very hard on my wrist. But this review is not about tubas. It's about my Wessex Superbone. I'm extremely pleased with the Superbone. The valves are slick. The slide is slick. The slide lock is a bit sticky and hard to engage, but is getting easier over time. It seems to play in tune when playing with the valves but with the use of the slide it can be adjusted. It is a bit awkward to play left handed, but I'm getting used to it. Mine came with two (2) mouthpiece receivers and two mouthpieces. The one installed in the horn was for small shank. The one in the case fits large shank or bass bone mouthpiece supplied with the horn. I swapped out the tenor mp receiver for the larger shank receiver and am playing a Schilke 59 with a shorter shank. I don't know if it was shortened or not, but that's the way it was when I got it. Would I buy it again? Yes. This is my third purchase from Wessex. And I'm considering a fourth horn as well. Now if only they would answer my question about French Horns.

This is a trombone o have been wanting to obtain for roughly two years now, and seeing how Wessex was selling this at a relatively low price compared to other manufacturers, this was an opportunity I couldn't pass up. I've been meaning to upgrade from my normal p-shooter I've been using since seventh grade, so why not go for this? Once it had arrived, I open the case, and I can safely say this is a good horn, if you're looking for something unique. It definitely plays and sounds well, the piston valves work very well for a trombone. Be warned though, you'll have to adjust your slide positions from regular tenor trombones. The slide here is slightly shorter on length, and due to the valve component, is positioned out by around 1& 1/2". Also, if your going to get a mouthpiece, be sure is is a small shank. The lead pipe is only 1/2", and despite the design's appearance, you'll have to unsolder the leadpipe if you want to use a larger bore. I think it'd be great if this instrument had a larger bore as an option, but otherwise I have no other complaints about.
