Wonderful instrument! I have a Besson 983EEb tuba. This Helicon is free blowing just like 983. I'll play this horn in my recital on Dec.2nd, the national Recital Hall in Taiwan. Hope we can get more feedback from the audience.

The Wessex Helicon (HB24 Silver) is an amazing piece of engineering, capturing the romance of the brass bands of the past and transfusing it into a modern, well-playing instrument. The four piston valves are smooth and easy to reach, allowing rapid passages to be played effortlessly. The horn has the tone quality of a very good tuba, while projecting the sound of the instrument over the top of th band. The water keys, all three of them, are hard to reach while inside the horn, but emptying them with the bottom bow on your knees works well. The horn is larger and heavier than I expected, but better balanced than my H N White sousaphone, and easier to play. There are obvious improvements in the technology of the valves and water keys and bell screws, but even more improvement in the technology that is employed in the manufacturing of these horns. The quality of the brass bending techniques and molding has improved, making for smaller tolerances in the fitting of the tubes and slides. All in all, this horn is a wonder and must be played to fully realize the quality and craftmanship that has produced this beautiful, mellow monster.
