I'm a french horn player and alwaays wanted to have a wagner tuba. Finally I got an affordable one. It is excellent quality - and good fun. Nice, full sound and easy to play. It came with a hard case, which nevertheless was equipped with carrying straps, so transport isn't a problem.

This review is written after 1 month of ownership. The reader should know this is my first and only experience with a Wagner tuba, or with any compensating valve instrument. I have played horn for over 35 years. First, the instrument materials and workmanship are excellent. An uninformed observer would not guess the price based on the physical properties and appearance. So in that regard, it excels. I find the case to be a somewhat primitive: it is well-constructed and secures the instrument, but does so by very thick materials. As such, the case seems large relative to the instrument. From a playing standpoint, I find the instrument to be very good. There is a little stuffiness on the F side, but not intolerably so. Intonation on the Wagner tuba has always been described as troublesome, but with adequate practice one learns its tendencies and how to adjust. The only aspect I have some misgivings about is this instrument's suitability as a true basso tuba in F. It is a fine tenor, but I suspect that better results in the lowest register (basso tuba II) would be obtained with a dedicated bass instrument. Were Wessex to produce such a thing, i.e., with all the correct proportions, etc., at a price point similar to this double tuba, I likely would jump on it immediately. Be that as it may, I would not discourage any prospective buyer from this current double instrument as their opportunity to enter into the sacred society of Wagner tubists.

The instrument is amazing, perfect in every detail. Specially for the price. The instrument has a very good intonation, the mechanic it’s excellent and the sound is elegant and refined. The engraving on the bell and also on the upper part of the cylinder is also very nice. The case is comfortable. Highly recommended

I currently own three instruments from Wessex. This was my first purchase. Aside from the incredible quality of the instrument, the ease of playing, and the intonation, I was incredibly impressed by the quality of the customer service. I currently own 16 instruments (don't judge) and my only question is which to buy next. And when to find more time to practice. I recommend Wessex to all my students. I recommend them to you, too.
