I've been on the lookout for about 20 years for a compensating double-bell and it's been worth every minute of the wait and every penny of the price. With the modern updates and both recording and upright 8" bells, the Duplex represents the artist's tool for both stage and studio that was promised by the horns that inspired it. The open-wrap design is a wonder to play and it has a fine core-tone that can fit into your regular ensembles if you don't want to buy a second euphonium (or second baritone if you left middle finger is up to the task).

I first saw a very old double-belled euphonium when I was quite young, and I always wanted to play one. Now that I am approaching retirement, I decided to look into getting one and I was delighted to learn that Wessex Tubas was manufacturing them after no new ones had been made for about 60 years. The horn is exactly what I had hoped it would be and I am working hard in my spare time to learn how to play it, with the expectation of having more time once I do retire. Thanks for making this possible.

Superb build quality, velvety tone, vented compensating valves, love the 12” main bell and 8.5” tenor bell. Try placing a bucket mute on the little bell for more contrast! Great potential for jazz euphonium work. It is hefty, 13lbs, but it comes with a heavy duty leather strap! The instrument is a joy to play which will beckon you to play it again and again. My wife loved my Festivo so much I may never get it back, but the duplex plays like a bigger sounding Festivo, so very nice! Howard Miyata

I've only had this for about two months now, but initial reactions, so I'll get the negatives out of the way first. It's heavy. very heavy. Be gentle screwing the valve caps back on after oiling, the fine threads at least in the second valve have a tendency to want to cross thread.go slow and gentle and it will go on properly. Given the overall weight, the thumb ring seems a bit flimsy, as do the two hooks for a carry strap. I had to trim the fur in the case as it kept jamming the case zipper. With five valves, there are a lot of slides to pull for intonation, still working on a few notes. There, thats the bad. Now for the good: The price/value factor is excellent. I got the silver and it gleams. The sound is, for what I paid for this excellent, and once you get it tuned up, plays very well! The valve action is very good, no complaints, but after half a century of top action playing, the front action takes getting used to. The smaller bell sounds excellent as well. Shipping was remarkable, I think I ordered it on a Friday, and had it the following Wednesday. Well and securely packed! Good quality over all. Can't speak much yet to overall durability yet. Having said that, If you're looking for the Boosey sound, quality and action, spend that 8 grand. If you're looking for a restored turn of the century Conn, spend that 4 or 5 grand. But if you're looking for something that sounds good, looks good, is playable in all ranges and is affordable, this is it!!!!!
