I played a Wessex EP-100 for years, but needed to downsize, as I have arthritis in my shoulders and hands, and it was getting difficult to carry and play a larger horn. I LOVE my BR-140!! The horn has a pleasant timbre, somewhere between a baritone and a tenor trombone. It is fun to play, and much easier to hold and carry. And I get many compliments and questions about my cool looking horn. The valves were a little stiff and slow upon receipt. But with regular cleaning, wiping, and oiling (I use Yamaha Light Synthetic) the valve action has improved considerably. Also, in order to benefit from the compensating system, some alternative fingerings must be learned. Some pitches (D above Bass Clef staff comes to mind) sound particular bad using standard fingerings. (1+2 on aforementioned D sounds way better than 0.) With practice and experimentation, you can get superb intonation with this horn. Highly recommended!

Way beyond my expectations, as I had tested the waters by buying the alto horn (an instrument I have never played until now). I find this baritone model even easier to play, delightful in its warmth and timbre as well as dynamic range, and many times more enjoyable than my previous American-style baritone (which is somewhat closer to a euphonium except for bore shape). The silver finish is also well-done, and even the case is very secure and in no need of an upgrade. I use Wick mouthpieces but this one is very similar to my Stephen Mead model. I hope to buy a Wessex Tuba next year.

The instrument is a beautiful silver Baritone. The playability is excellant, its tone is lovely and sweet. My partner absolutely loved the Wyverns on the valve tops. 3 water keys help to keep moisture at bay, and the intonation makes it a pleasure to play. So very happy with instrument.

This is my third Wessex purchase over a ten year period. The Eb Champion Tuba has been a great buy, and I have been more than satisfied with all aspects. So much so I sold my Besson Sovereign Eb and have used the Wessex in brass and concert bands exclusively and very effectively. The three-valve compensated BR140 Baritone is a lovely horn. I love it, except for one irritating problem - valve hangup, mainly on the first valve. I have thoroughly researched the issue and am working through the suggested remedies one by one. I think progress is being made by experimenting with different grades of synthetic valve lubricants.

This is a good horn. Better than any I've played so far. The little intonation issues that most horns have are easily manageable on this. Quality is very good. I'm a trombone player 40+ years trying something new. A few baritone horns into this and I'm most satisfied with the wessex.

I was pleasantly surprised when I received my baritone. I knew that Wessex was supplying instruments at a very reasonable price, but I was surprised by the quality of the instrument. It has an excellent sound and I have definitely enjoyed playing it!
