With the Vantage Pro 2 rain gauge only tipping every 0.2mm I was keen to add an additional sensor that detected lower amounts of precipitation. Scaled from 0-15 it does an excellent job of detecting any precipitation, even snow, but it probably requires a little to melt. It's excellent at detecting the formation of dew, the recorded value gradually climbing from 0 through to 15. With rain it hits the max very quickly as you might expect. If it starts drizzling or fog rolls in the response is more gradual. I use the instrument primarily to record time of onset of precipitation and my wife uses it on windy, cloudy days when the washing's out to detect rain. It's pricey a you'll need a soil/leaf station to plug it in to, but it's very robust and the output fascinating. Need's little maintenance, just the odd wipe when a bird leaves a message on it!
