Who we are and how is it that we came to be so passionate about shoes?

Like many classics our story revolves around one or two ambitious pioneers, a love affair, war, a family drama, conflict and its resolution. What laces this story together is a connection with the land, and a need to provide for the people of it.

Let’s set the scene of how our business was born. It’s 1905 and Thomas Rogerson sits concentrating over his tools in a shed at the end of a bridge in Rothbury. Motivated by the desire to win the hand of Isabelle, he needs to learn a trade. And so it was that he learnt to repair shepherd’s boots.

Skip forward over 100 years from this humble beginning, and here we are; from robust, carefully crafted tackety boots designed to tackle the heather hilltops, to on-trend trainers in a spectrum of colours, designed to tackle the concrete jungle! Originally sold under canvas at agricultural shows, by mail order or taken directly to farms. Now, displayed using bright light boxes in our high street stores, or sold via easy on-line orders that will arrive at your door.

What’s new?

Our mission now is to stock a vibrant and compelling choice of shoes, boots, sandals, slippers and bags. Made using traditional and progressive manufacturing techniques and a wide range of materials from Gore-Tex to vegetable tanned leathers, our selection is diverse. Ranging from fun, quirky, edgy and joyful designs, to sophisticated classics, to practical waterproof adventure shoes and boots for enjoying the hills.

Different from other footwear retailers in terms of the breadth of our range, we stock many styles that are unique to our business, including colour combinations, prints and lasts. Prioritising pricing, quality and comfort we work on the principle that well-made shoes wear better, are more of a pleasure to wear, and ultimately, are less wasteful.

Passionate people

The Rogerson’s ethos is one of positivity, and we aim to employ happy people who enjoy their work and convey this in their attitude to others. With weekly training on everything from leather, construction techniques and technical features, our staff aim to facilitate a friendly and efficient shopping experience and will go out of their way to bring you all the shoes you fancy trying on! Alternatively, one of our 120 strong team of keen beans will carefully parcel them up for your online orders. We dispatch from both our central warehouse in the pretty town of Peebles, and from our 13 busy stores across Scotland.

I purchased a pair of shoes from Rogerson. It was very difficult to get them to ship me the shoes, as they kept having problems processing my credit card (a card that has worked in over 40 countries), but in their defense, it's because they have an overly complicated security system that is meant to protect the consumer. The more egregious part of the transaction was when I received the shoes themselves. The moment they were removed from the box, I wrote to the company informing them that there was a defect in the shoe. I'd purchased this exact same shoe elsewhere and wore it for YEARS with zero problems. This one had a defect on day one. I let them know that I still needed to wear the shoes as they were purchased for a specific purpose and I had no time to get replacements this late, but that prior to wearing them, a defect had been found. They refused to exchange the shoes because I wore them after discovering the defect. As I wore them, I discovered a second defect that only would have been detectable upon wearing them - the back of one of the shoes was not constructed properly and cuts into the heel in a way that hurts/breaks the skin even with socks on. The previous incarnation of these same shoes were wearable without socks and were the most comfortable shoes I'd ever owned (which is why I sought out the same shoes again!). Suffice it to say that I threw away my money, that the shoes are unwearable and that Rogerson has done nothing to alleviate the situation except offer up hollow condolences. What a let down, especially after having to jump through so many hoops to have my initial transaction go through.
