“These Garstangs (Bronze Brown) are my second pair, the first are in Teak and share the rough, distressed look that is so much better in the flesh (pun intended) than the website pictures. It won’t be to everyone’s taste as the boots look well-worn from the get go; I love its character.
These solid boots have proved to be waterproof on my twice-daily, muddy,rural dog walks, despite not even claiming to be “water resistant”.
I ordered my usual size 10 and, as is always the case for me in Lanx, they were initially a little snug for my wide feet. I find that leather upper footwear that doesn’t require any break in is usually going to end up a bit slack and tends to be an indicator of poorer quality leather. I have 5 pairs of Lanx and all had a slight pinch at first; thick socks can speed up break in and I always use shoe trees.
The Dainite “logger” commando-treaded sole is better on mud than the lighter, easier-to-clean Vibram sole of my other favourite Lanx Chelsea boots, the Ribchester. The Dainite is also less good on rocks, if that’s important to you. Not a criticism, just horses for courses. My only criticism is that the way the sole of the heel is cut on the size 10 leaves a rather thin, flexible sliver of tread-block at the front edge of the heel, which inevitably deforms a little. Doesn’t affect function and not visible in normal use but could be avoided if the cut off took this into account. Not a reason not to buy and may not affect bigger or smaller sizes.
Lanx should be applauded for offering these excellent UK-made products at the price point they do. I have Chelsea boots from Le Chameau and RM Williams and the Garstangs are better value.
My loyalty points will probably end up spent on a third pair of Garstangs in Caramel or Cognac-grained.”
