Picea - spruce - can be identified by their conical shape and spiral branches, some of the needles are shed when 4-10 years old, leaving the branches looking and feeling rough. Grow in most soils and sun or part shade. They require no pruning and can be left to grow on their own as they are slow growing, they tend to be classed as dwarf conifers.
