Hydrangea are deciduous shrubs and climbers. They are grown for their beautiful flowers that last throughout the summer and autumn. Hydrangea leaves are narrowly ovate and change colour through autumn from green to orange-brown. Flowers vary widely in colour from white to blue. Colour can be affected by the pH of the soil, pinks and whites are neutral soils and blue thrives in acidic soil. Colour can also be changed by using a Hydrangea colourant. Flower heads can be dried and used in flower arrangements or they can be left on through the Winter so the frost can make them sparkle. Mop head and lace cap hydranges do not need much pruning only the slight dead heading, these shrubs flower on last years wood.
