Dryopteris ferns are mostly deciduous but in mild winters most do stay green in sheltered sites. They bear pinnate to 4 pinnate fronds, they produce kidney shaped spores. The foliage looks very attractive planted with herbaceous perennials and shrubs. Best planted in a sheltered, partially shady border with moist, humus-rich soil with other shade-loving woodland perennials. Dryopteris Atrata is a slightly larger growing fern with leathery leaves surounded by serrated leaflets. Has black scales that give it it's name They can gro up to a height of 90cm
