Phormium or New Zealand Flax are evergreen plants that make a large clump of leathery, strap-like, upright foliage. They bare tall panicles of tubular flowers. Phormiums require full sun or partial shade and a moist well drained soil. Cut out any dead or damaged leaves in spring with a sharp pair of secateurs. Propagate from seeds sown in Spring.Phormiums make beautiful architectural plants and like to be planted at the back of the border or as a feature specimen. Phormium Black in Black is a stunning compact shrub with leaves that deep blackish purple.
