Ceanothus or californian lilac are evergreen shrubs which can grow into small trees if left to their own. Some varities are upright shrubs and you can also get a spreading varities which are ideal for ground cover or trailing.
To grow ceanothus they are suitable for shrub borders at the back or against a sunny wall, they also make an amazing hedge which is perfect for attracting bees and butterflies. Planting ceanothus should be grown in fertile, well-drained soil.
