Ilex or Holly is a huge family with many different varieties. They can be evergreen shrubs or trees, they differ so much depending on the variety as not all have spikes. Holly make lovely hedges or nice specimens. They are very low maintenance as they are slow growing. Ilex Crenata Blondie - Japanese box leaved holly a lovely bushy shrub with minutely scalloped lime green leaves, a great option for topiary. Hollies like to be planted in moist well drained soil in sun or shade, ideally they do like a sheltered site.
