Ilex or holly is a huge family with many different varieties. They can be evergreen shrubs or trees, they differ so much depending on the variety as not all have spikes. Holly make lovely hedges or nice specimens. They are very low maintenance as they are slow growing. Hollies like to be planted in moist well drained soil in sun or shade. Ilex meserveae Heckenstar is a beautiful holly with glossy deep green foliage that though serrated are not sharp. It's a male holly so it will not fruit, the benefit is a much bushier plant with more leaf and vigour. Or you can dot it among the female partner Heckenfee to pollinate her.

“These holly bushes look great, they are very mature, larger than I expected in fact. They make a perfect instant hedge. I was filling a large gap (created by overgrowing bamboo which had been removed) in a mature hedge. The leaves are smaller and softer than the traditional holly that we already have, but these fit in nicely and look like they have been there for years. Delivery was fast and friendly. Delivered onto our drive on a pallet with a forklift. Bear in mind they are very large and take some moving.”
