Ilex or Holly is a huge family with many different varieties. They can be evergreen shrubs or trees, they differ so much depending on the variety as not all have spikes. Holly make lovely hedges or nice specimens. They are very low maintenance as they are slow growing. Hollies like to be planted in moist well drained soil in sun or shade, ideally they do like a sheltered site. Ilex Fastigiata or Japanese Holly is a columnar shaped shrub with minutely scalloped glossy dark green leaves. For them to fruit you will need male and female or plant in a group. Height reaches 2.5-4 metres
