Organic Fonio is a seed that works like a grain - move over Quinoa!
Organic Fonio is nothing new, but its debut in the health food world is. It is a source of protein and is a perfect addition to a vegan or vegetarian diet, due to its high amounts of the amino acids methionine and cysteine. Just one serving of fonio contains around 10% of an adult's daily recommended intake of amino acids.
It is the smallest seed in the millet family and can be used in so many ways. This ancient food is classed as a 'pseudo-grain' because although we use it as a grain it is actually a seed. This means it is higher in nutrients and protein than most grains.
Our organic fonio hails from Burkina Faso which is a mountainous area of Western Africa. It has been a staple food for there thousands of years and it works well in a wide range of sweet and savoury recipes.
