I'm sorry to hear about this, Alison. Solid brass items naturally develop a darker patina as they age, depending on their exposure to different elements.
You can easily restore their shine by giving them a quick buff using brasso. If you prefer to let them develop a rich patina all over, it won't cause any harm to the tag or the lettering itself.
