I find them easier to use with cleated shoes rather than flat shoes. When starting you always have to spin the pedal 180° to get the flat side up. With cleats you can usually just click in. If I was mainly going to wear flat shoes I think i would use ordinary pedals and change to cleats if I was going touring for a few days.

Spot on for my first pair of clipping in pedals can still use them for ordinary bike shoes and they are real easy to clip in or out as pedal is easily put in right position whilst moving
