Pleased with the construction quality, easy to mount on silver birch tree, it's replaced a rotted out bird box that had blue tits ever year, so the true test will be shown by the tits settling in this coming spring, time will tell.

The Woodstone nest box is solid and well-constructed. This robust box looks like it will definitely be woodpecker and squirrel proof. All but the removable front is made from a material said to be a mixture of wood fibre and cement. The front is made from a different material, more like plaster of Paris. The entrance hole is surrounded by a thickened section, which should deter any would-be predators. The box is fixed to its chosen place via a good-quality hanging hook. The fit of the front is quite loose, so I glued a thin piece of foam from the packing to the bottom side edges of the recess in the main part of the box and this improved the fit. When the box is hung, it leans forward quite a way, too much for me, so I fixed a strip of thick closed-cell foam to the back at the bottom, which makes the box sit more vertical and protects it and the tree (in this case) from abrasion. The front of the box is white in colour and stands out. This was not what I wanted, so I painted it with water-based paint in olive green, taking care to leave an unpainted area around the hole because birds don't seem to like paint. The box is in place and looks good. It's probably too late to be used this year but is available rent-free to blue tits and similar birds for the next breeding season. Lucky birds!
