“Subject: Concerns Regarding My Recent Experience at East Midlands Airport Mid Stay 1 Car Park
I am writing to express my concerns regarding an incident that took place on 6th December 2024 at approximately 18.45-19.00 during my exit from the Mid Stay 1 Car Park at East Midlands Airport. My booking reference for this stay is JORV1.
I experienced significant difficulty when attempting to exit the car park. Despite no previous travel issues throughout the rest of the day, the automatic number plate recognition camera system failed to recognize my vehicle's number plate. This issue was compounded by inadequate lighting in the exit area, which made it challenging to locate and operate the communication devices.
The foul weather on that day further exacerbated the situation. I observed another vehicle encountering similar difficulties, eventually managing to exit after considerable effort. Unfortunately, I was not as fortunate. Compelled to leave my vehicle, I crossed to Mid Stay 3 to seek assistance. The well-lit conditions there made it possible to find and use the communication call button. Upon contacting a staff member, I was informed that an improper alignment of my car relative to the cameras could have caused the issue—a circumstance I find improbable given the narrow exits and entry points designed by the use of barriers and cones.
Eventually, with the guidance of the assistance staff, I was able to exit. However, this entire episode left a significant blemish on an otherwise pleasant holiday experience.
I believe such experiences at your facility can be alleviated with improvements to the car park facilities, including enhanced lighting and regular maintenance checks on the automatic recognition systems to ensure their reliability & field of vision. I kindly request you investigate these issues and consider implementing improvements.

“Ok to drive car into but then the problem starts. We arrived at night. Pedestrian exit not obvious in dark. Needs much better signage and route to departures needs highlighting more. Also the pavements are shocking. The majority of people have wheeled cases now, but the route to the airport from the car park is so uneven that in some parts we had to pick the cases up to avoid damage.”
“This is the first time we’ve tried Mid Stay 1 and it won’t be our last. It was so easy to park up and walk to the terminal. No waiting for buses or phoning to say you’ve landed. Perfect”
