"During my experience with Varsity Education, students from different year groups had an opportunity to experience university style lessons, lectures and tutorials within two chosen subjects, as well as whole group workshops which stretch beyond subjects they were learning. With Oxbridge students and alumni as tutors, the lessons are quite accurate and varied to the subjects, especially as the tutors teach the way they understand and enjoy the subject, meaning lessons are engaging. These demonstrated the differences between lessons at secondary school and at university. Mock admission examinations and interviews paint a picture of difficulty and what work is needed for the applications. The tutors give feedback and advice in a supportive, though realistic way. We also learnt more about time and money management from experience in the town, skills which will definitely help when we eventually reach university ourselves. A student doesn’t have to only be aiming for Oxbridge to attend this summer programme, because the university experience in general is useful for the future independent of which university they will attend. Though if a student is aiming for Oxbridge, the course helps with explaining the unique application process, as well as aiding the decision between the two universities and others. As a student entering my last year of school, I found the lessons at an appropriate level of difficulty, with new concepts introduced through logical thinking, and some concepts already learnt being explained in more detail than the A level or GCSE courses. Tutors, houseparents and other students were all very accommodating to everyone, and inclusive, so it was easy to get to know other students with the lunch hours and afternoon group activities. During free time, we managed to explore the town to learn our way around, and there were also tours of the area and colleges. Personally, when I fell sick for one day, the staff were very kind and made sure to help me to quick recovery, even through the night, as well as making sure my roommate was relocated for the night, so it was not contagious. Overall, I feel like this experience was very useful for me to learn more about the university experience in general."
