We used to use 'original' inks but moved over to compatibles (Canon 551 & 550 XL) because of the price saving, and to be quite honest we cannot tell the difference in use! The compatible's usually come in clear plastic cartridges allowing you to actually see how much ink is still left (despite most printers will flash-up "out of ink" when there is still enough left for at least 5 - 10 A4's).
