Spent a week in The Cottage @ Bagdale from 4th to 11th November. In summary we found the cottage was geographically ideal for walking into Whitby and the property was more or less spotlessly clean on arrival. Unfortunately there are many negatives and after looking at numerous reviews on other review sites I don’t think we are on our own with some serious issues and I think the owners should be made aware and asked to correct these as soon as they can. In no particular order. The property isn’t clearly identified and the parking slot isn’t straight forward to park there safely, the property is more or less surrounded by a food wholesale warehouse, Trillos and early morning deliveries and collections cause the parking slot entry/exit to be blocked by vans and wagons. The heating system is controlled by a Google system integrated into the broadband router, there are no instructions on how to control this, either heat or time and I didn’t figure it out all week, this has been mentioned by numerous other people staying at the cottage. There is a wood burner in place, also advertised as part of the facilities, no fuel/logs/kindling/matches, are guests expected to source a supplier and bring back to the cottage? Floor covering in the kitchen area is a laminated wood style covering but has large gaps between each plank section and is loose and a trip hazard. The furniture, in particular the two 2 seater settees are very uncomfortable, the fabric is stained and worn/bobbly. The broadband speed/bandwidth is inadequate to support the smart TV so such as iPlayer, Netflix etc can’t be watched as they won’t run or they buffer continuously. The shower tray in the ensuite shower wasn’t useable due to the drain being blocked and the tray flooding if used. No waste/rubbish bins in any bathroom and no toilet roll holders. The bath in the main bathroom requires urgent attention to the caulking/seal around the joint between bath and tiles, there is a large gap which gets larger when the bath is filled with water or stood in to shower, the caulking is also badly stained and brown in colour. The bedding, pillows and duvets are low quality, in particular the duvets are at best summer grade and we were cold in bed and had to use two duvets to keep warm, made worse due to the heating system timing and temperature control being unfathomable. The furniture in the bedrooms are cheap flatpack assembled units which are wobbly and flimsy. The bath sheet towels should be replaced, they are thin and end of useful life. The bed mattress in the ensuite room is particularly uncomfortable. Many of the walls are marked or have scuffs or paint chips. In conclusion, the cottage is not to a luxury standard and is basically at best a functional holiday let and didn’t at over £1,000 for a week for 2 people (including a discount) in November represent value for money.
