“My ZZR 1400 (1352cc, a DF8 ABS model) is a 2008 model in "Metalic Midnight Saphire Blue". It does not have the adjustable power switch. It just starts and goes. I have 10mm bar risers fitted. It is my 3rd bike. 1st a Honda CB 125 to learn on, 2nd a Honda VFR 800. Passed my test on that in Nov 2011. By 2014 I bought this my ZZR 1400 with 7K on the clock.
I now have 14K on the clock and so far I have not had any trouble what so ever. Well actually the speedo misted up during the winters but I opened up the casing and dried it out indoors then after refitting it I closed the cable inlet to it with a cable tie and walla. No more misting.
Even today it is still probably the fastest production bike in a straight line. 2.5 sec ) - 62 mph. I drive in town at 30 mph in 6th gear. 5th is actually best. On occasions I sometimes pull away in 3rd (tut tut) and with a bit of clutch slipping it's ok. Very forgiving.
I chance the iol and filter about every 3000 miles give or take. Clean the chain and oil every 400 miles or so. Up to now having done 7000 miles in 3+ years and continually checked the chain and brakes, the chain has not needed adjustment and now at 14000 miles the front brakes pads are approaching the lower limit. Rear not so as yet.
Normal mpg is 40. Best I have had is 54. Quality is good. No rust, well my added center stand has some but it does get peppered by the road. The various hydraulic connections both by the brake calipers and various small parts down in the area where the forks rise up to the handle bars seems to corrode slightly year by year but is easily cleaned off and painted black. Normally where there is discimilar metals being affected by electrolytic action but its under control.
Do I love this bike! You bet I do. I'm not the best rider in the world and I know my limits (I think) This bike I have never driven to its potential limit as I value my sanity (and licence) more.
Would I recommend it, Ohhhh Yes. There's pretty much nothing in standard form that will out gun it. Yesterday I tried a BMW R1200rs, a twin cylinder machine. Loved the riding position but hated the engine. Its not slow but definitely not so responsive as a straight 4.
Some time ago I tried a Suzuki hyabusa. Didn't realise it starts in low power setting, everyone passed me. Once in full power mode wow did it shift. Problem, it sits too low for me, knees around my ears.
Back to the ZZR1400. Its not a racing bike, its a super fast cruiser.
Just one very important point. If you like me are unfortunate enough to be waiting stationary and your foot slips on gravel left by car tyres in the center of the road and your bike then has a tussel with the laws of nature and looses and falls ever so gently to the ground flinging you off to the side it falls, then be very much advised your name better be Arnold Swartzenegger in order to lift your pride and joy back on to two wheels. How do I know this, I'll give you one guess. Boy did I look stupid. Good job there was no one around or was it. I really could have done with some help as the bike weighs in at 265Kg in ready to go state. Try one, you cant throw it around like a full race bike but it is long and soaks up bumps and is ballistically fast. The End.”
“Love the bike! Moved onto this bike from a 13yr old Kawasaki Zx6r (rode it for 2yrs, straight from passing test to cut my teeth) as it started to feel a bit small for me and not really a great bike for touring.
Moved to the ZZR1400 to still keep the sports bike feel, but also for its capacity to eat the miles aimlessly and in relative comfort. I have not looked back!
Petrified of the 1400cc to start with, and rightly so, as the bike is a monster and can literally zip round traffic in the blink of an eye, but the bike really is a pussycat to handle, and surprisingly gentle on the corners.
Pleasure to ride, and I have the knowledge of knowing I own one of the fastest hypersport bikes in production, and a pretty rounded tourer too.”
