After viewing a six-bed property in 2019 with seven others (two couples and three singles), my prospective housemates and I were assured that it was legal to occupy the house in an eight person tenancy. We then faced a hellish four months in communication with a very unreasonable Property Manager. Foxtons had assured us that bedroom furniture could all be removed on request. This turned out to not be the case. In total, my (incredibly over-furnished) 3mx4m box room had a 6ft wardrobe, chest, three bedside tables, double bed and a large chest or drawers. I could barely move inside of it, and the Property Manager refused to remove anything. After contacting Foxtons, they did nothing. The house’s repeated power shortages were then finally linked to the fact that the first floor attic (that we were told we didn't have access to) was storing so much that items were actually pressing against the wiring for the LED ceiling lights. Instead of apologising for this major fire hazard, after a meeting with the Property Manager (who we have written evidence proving he was aware there were eight of us living there) we were told that someone needed to vacate the property by 'the end of the month', as legally the house could only hold seven. Foxtons did nothing to support us throughout this emergency eviction situation, although they were the ones that assured us the house could legally hold eight. Unfortunately, the UK COVID-19 lockdown hit just as we were leaving (after these events, five of us decided to leave in order to get as far as possible from Foxtons). Lockdown obviously slowed the moving process, but to say Foxtons was useless throughout is an understatement. Two of my current housemates ended up paying for their new and old bedroom for a total of four months, after their replacement had to pull out. Several viewers over lockdown were interested, but after Foxton’s complete lack of urgency and organisation, they were hesitant to sign and ended up pulling out. - We have written evidence from three separate couples stating that is was Foxton’s handling of the property/contract that made them back away from signing for the room - After the room was finally filled, it took Foxtons a further month to finalise our contract. I moved out in Feb 2020, and received my deposit in December. The agency were unbelievable. After losing a contract, they requested a photo of it instead. After submitting one, they took two weeks to respond, only to request another as the photo wasn’t clear enough. After re-submitting, it took them another week to respond. Typically, unless I emailed every day and phoned, I never received a response. It was the same for every current and ex-tenant. I’m absolutely appalled by Foxtons. This complaint barely scratches the surface at their incompetence, unprofessionalism and general lack of care. I strongly advise anyone currently house hunting to avoid this company at all costs.
