“They made a claim on my behalf and got some money back for me, but took over 50 %. I would check the percentage they take before letting them make a claim on your behalf.”

Hi Gareth, I've looked into this for you. We work on a no win no fee basis usually charging a much smaller percentage of any refund received (but also charging absolutely nothing if no refund is found) however, we do charge a minimum fee of £38 for any refund we obtain for our clients and as your refund was relatively small it means that the fee did indeed end up being more than half. Please keep in mind that had you employed an accountant to review your tax code and complete the work we have completed for you then you would have been charged far more for their services. “This sounds like a great service, especially as I am a nurse and my salary is fairly low, but in actual fact it’s not. The tax refund took almost half of what I was owed in order to look in to my claim. I will not be using this service ever again. Waste of time. You may as well claim your tax back directly from HMRC.”

Hi Amie, thanks for using our service (it really is a great service) I'm pleased to hear that we found discrepancies in your tax code and managed to get you a refund in the process. With regards to your comments about our fees - firstly, we certainly do not take almost half of our clients refunds, if we did, we probably wouldn't have been able to be in business for over the 25 years that we have. I see you applied in response to our marketing material through the RCN, if you look at the letter you responded to, it clearly explains how we charge clients and it's not hidden in the small print somewhere in the way that some less than reputable firms do. Our fees are also clearly laid out in our terms and conditions which all clients agree to when they apply. You may also not be aware that, as part of our service, we ensure that your tax code is corrected too. This means that not only did you get a refund for overpaid tax from previous years, but you will also be paying less tax from now on therefore saving more and more money as time goes by. As there are no extra charges from us for this, it means our service becomes better and better value the more money you are saving. And finally, could you go directly to HMRC and reclaim any overpaid tax yourself? Yes of course you could, as long as you understand UK tax law and how to challenge HMRC when they tell you that your tax code is correct (which they often do - hence a company like ourselves being in business). Some people understand how it works and go directly to HMRC and sort it out for themselves with no issues, others that don't really know what they're doing attempt the same thing and get nothing in return or make errors and end up receiving a tax demand. As with your own profession, if a patient or service user knows what they're doing they could administer their own medication for example, but if they're not sure or maybe think they are but really don't know what they're doing then the consequences of getting it wrong could be quite severe. Sometimes it's best to employ the services of a professional. Kind regards
