The work the AHOY Centre charity is delivering on the River Thames is both innovative and inspiring. By working with those most in need of support they are helping those with disabilities and providing excellent diversionary activities for young people. Taking those most at risk off the streets and away from the path of negative and anti-social behaviour they provide extensive training and, most importantly, teach the citizenship & life skills that are fundamental tools for finding future employment.

Having been involved with The Ahoy from a very early stage, the achievements I have seen first hand have been fantastic. The opportunities given to so many disabled and less fortunate people are clear to see. To give so many people a future they can enjoy and be proud of is priceless . The practical and teamwork skills taught will help so many in the future in so many different areas of their lives, The whole project has been a great success and with the dedication of the staff, volunteers and so many others I know it will continue to grow and we are all proud of Clive Ongley for his dedication and commitment. “Brent Knoll school is a Cooperative Trust special school for children aged 4 -16 with complex social, communication and interaction difficulties including autism. Our pupils have been to The AHOY Centre to learn and to experience the fun and excitement that sailing on the River Thames brings. Their enjoyment of these activities is evident and leads to improved communication and self-confidence. We fully support AHOY’s vital work with disadvantaged and disabled children and more of our pupils will be taking to the water in 2016 to benefit from their programmes.”

For the past three years Art Hub Gallery in Deptford has held a charity postcard auction to fundraise for local organisations - one of them being the AHOY Centre. We have visited the centre on several occasions and always received a warm welcome from beneficiaries and the dedicated team who work on their behalf. We have been very impressed with the facilities and scope of activities provided for the young people attending the centre as well as the the drive to improve and develop. It has been a pleasure for Art Hub to raise money for AHOY and to support their work in improving the lives of disadvantaged young people and the local community.

I am a huge fan and supporter of The AHOY Centre. I have visited often and I'm always so impressed by the commitment and passion of their staff and volunteers who all work so hard to help others. Their work is impressive and much needed in this community where poverty and disadvantage is still too evident. Long may they continue and flourish!

I am an AHOY supporter and fully support their vital work in, what still remains, one of London’s most deprived areas. They have a range of diverse programmes which help both disadvantaged young people and disabled people and I have seen the difference their work makes

We were excited at the prospect of rowing across the English channel and the Ahoy centre have this amazing challenge which fitted the bill! None of us had really rowed before but the friendly Ahoy team took us from beginners to competent rowers in Four months. No mean feat!

“We were looking to work with a Charity where we could make a difference and help both financially and also somewhere for our staff to volunteer their help & skills. Since our involvement we have seen at first-hand the work The AHOY Centre does and the great successes they have achieved with the young people they work with, which is truly inspiring. Their staff and volunteers are all so enthusiastic and passionate which is striking and uplifting and their passion is contagious! As a Company we are very pleased to be working with them and our staff are in full support of helping & volunteering. With The AHOY we have found a charity where we can see directly how our involvement is helping to give others less fortunate the chance to truly succeed and develop.” Oliver Stockland General Manager Hilton London Canary Wharf

Ahoy are providing Life Changing experiences on two spereate fronts . The first is the fantastic work they do day in day out with individuals and groups in the surrounding communities and the second is the fantastic experiences it offers those who wish to provide their support through volunteering and fundrasing. After rowing the English Channel in 2013 with my HSBC Bank PLC colleagues, I immediaitely set about ensuring the next row down the Thames was organiased which we undertook one sunny October Morning in 2014 The staff, volunteers and attendees at The Ahoy Centre are the most warm and welcoming people you could hope for and all the while they are preppring you for truly life affirming activites.

The AHOY Centre is doing an incredible job bringing sailing, navigation, seamanship, boatbuilding and other skills to this disadvantaged area of London. It is very rare for any sailing centre to be as diverse as this and it is impossible to estimate the enormous good they are doing not just for sailing but the community as a whole. Everything about the AHOY Centre from the facilities, staff, the work they do and the fundraising is excellent.

Provident have been funding AHOY's Shipmates Programme for some years now and we have always been impressed with the exceptional way that they deploy their funding. They are an organisation with great vision and integrity and as such we have a very open and honest relationship with them to ensure that we both get the most out of it. When it comes to getting colleagues involved through fundraising activities, AHOY have an excellent range of corporate opportunities, some of which we have taken part in, including The Great River Race. They ensured that the group were well looked after throughout, including comprehensive training and support. I would have no hesitation in recommending AHOY to other potential funders. The work that they do is fantastic and they have achieved some outstanding results for young people in a community which very much needs organisations like AHOY. The Girdlers' Company Charitable Trust has supported the AHOY's Shipmate Programme annually for the past 10 years. Each young person to have won the Girdlers' Medallion has been remarkable for their skill and commitment in helping others. The AHOY's leadership is to be congratulated in making the AHOY a place where young people in Deptford and south east London can develop important skills well beyond what they thought possible.

The day at AHOY was great fun and at the same time we got to learn more about the Centre and all the fantastic work they are doing to help those in the local community. It is a great way to engage staff or work colleagues in a very positive activity and we found this great for team building.

Our HSBC team building event at AHOY was definitely one of the best we have ever done – not only was it successful for the company and staff involved but also we were supporting a Charity doing great work in London.

Denzel's become more aware of different days and times and although he has no speech yet, he has come to know the day on which he attends the centre. His attention span has improved from a couple of minutes to about ten to fifteen minutes on an activity and occasionally longer. Furthermore, he is able to act on instructions within a sentence whereas in the past he was only able to comprehend single word expressions. Denzel now conducts himself much better within a group setting than previously. He is much more likely to stay and work with a group rather than wander off; something he was prone to doing a few years ago. Denzel now readily acknowledges his peers without prompts. The encouragement and attention that Denzel has received from staff and volunteers has helped him gain more confidence, especially when attempting new challenges.

I am part of the Lloyds Bank Foundation mentoring scheme where Lloyds’ employees choose a charity to support and guide. I chose The AHOY Centre because it offers such diverse training and opportunities and is sited in one of London’s most deprived areas. Since then I have seen at first hand the excellent results they achieve both with their young participants and disabled people. I am also hugely impressed with the calibre of staff and volunteers whose enthusiasm and passion is evident.

As an organisation we undertook "a challenge" with AHOY, the main reason being that it was the only organisation willing to take 20 plus staff on for a day. Our day with AHOY exceeded our expectations. The organisation of the day was first class - we were looked after as a group and individually, it was not "just another group". The staff clearly love their jobs - probably unfair to call them jobs as they talked and worked with such passion and enthusiasm. We were reeling from what they were doing, and how they achieved through others. Nothing was too much trouble - by the end of the day we unanimously agreed for them to be our nominated charity for the year and set out to raise £5,000 for them. The following year we went back for another day, building on the previous experience, and presented them with a cheque for over £7,000. The place is buzzing most when they are doing what they are there to do - the looks on the faces of some of the children they'd taken out on the water were those looks and smiles you normally have reserved for Christmas - the impact of what had happened if measured on the broadness of smiles was almost off the chart. They are dedicated and deliver - I am so pleased to have had the opportunities to work with them - time very well spent!

The Royal Borough of Greenwich recognises the many difficulties faced by disadvantaged young people. The AHOY Centre plays a crucial role in helping them build self confidence and develop life skills. This in turn enables them to contribute positively towards society. The Charity has an impressive track record of providing life-changing opportunities accessible to all, with excellent results. I have visited over a number of years and am always impressed by the range of experience on offer, as well as the knowledge, skills and enthusiasm of everyone taking part. Councillor John Fahy Deputy Leader of the Council, Royal Borough of Greenwich

There is something very special going on at AHOY – the training, coaching & mentoring they are giving to those Young People most at Risk and the successes they have achieved is astounding. I am privileged to be amongst such outstanding and committed people. Suzanne Zaleski
