I'm using the HD camera with Raspberry Pi 3A and an old spare Fujinon lens as 35mm slide copier.
I have an electroluminescent display to backlight the slides and just use Raspistill via SSH from a Python application on my linux desktop. Taking 5 images at different EV's then using enfuse to merge gives a very good 'HDR'like image.
This is *significantly* better than my old V2 camera based version.
PiMoroni did a great job shipping the camera out especially given Current Circumstances.
As for the camera itself, it's a decent piece of kit, the sensor appears well matched to the job I've got for it as a telescope imager. I bought without a lens and the adapter I've got for the telescope doesn't screw in quite as securely as I'd like but it does hold OK. Attached are the "first light" pictures I got straight off raspistill of the moon in daytime - focus and contrast can be put down to a mid-afternoon hot day rather than the camera.
Now I just need to fight v4l2 to get similar quality images out of EKOS via INDI....
I was able in a few hours to program this device as a readout to my temperature/air quality sensor.
The device updates (monochrome) in 2-3 seconds, and the provided example code was a good basis for my readout. Its power consumption is minimal - the Pi Zero W to which it is attached runs all day from a 5000mAh battery pack.
I'm very pleased with this device, and would definitely recommend it. Even during lockdown it arrived the day after I ordered it, there are some good examples so it is displaying something within an hour of unpacking, after which it's down to the imagination of the programmer.
NB, you must have a GPIO header on your Pi - recommend Pimoroni's Pi Zero with a pre-soldered header.
Bought this to see what it was like compared to the official camera, wasn't expecting it to be as small as it is but quality wise its outstanding.
I've fitted it to a Pi Zero with a custom made bracket to fit inside a dummy cctv case to us as a wildlife camera watching the fix in the garden in the nights.
Will be buying a few more of these for other projects as soon as I can.
Attached is a photo taken from the camera.
Forget the software. I wanted to "play" a file on a remote RPI0W and hoped for a simple programming interface. Fortunately if you make the device the default output device the Raspian omxplayer works fine eg. "omxplayer -o alsa sound file path" Its a dedicated application.
Very solidly made but not too heavy and painted a discrete grey. Excellent performance. I've made my own mount for it using two stainless steel tubes. One tube is fitted permanently to the bike rack of my campervan. The other tube slides inside this and carries the antenna. The aim is to be able to quickly mount the antenna when I arrive at a location.
Perfect to take hats or breakouts on a different angle!
“Pimoroni offered great prices and really quick delivery.
Also they offered to send the missing screws (from one of my orders) to me free of charge and did so promptly and included an entire replacement unit also.
Mistakes sometimes happen, that's just the way of life, but what matters is how we deal with these mistakes and Pimoroni dealt with it admirably and has ensure I have a high level of confidence in their service for future purchased.
Needless to say, the product is now ideal for purpose, a great price and I highly recommend shopping with Pimoroni and will be doing so myself for all future related tech purchases. :-)”
“First time I made an order on piromoni for a raspberry pi 4 + piromoni case.
The parcel came faster as expected (of of the items was out of order when I made my purchase).
I will certainly buy again on piromoni.”
“Great company. Fast delivery and everything is as ordered. Great easy to use website with plenty of tech help, projects and helpful links. The range of products is excellent and its a must see site for anyone looking to learn more about all sorts of tech possibilities.”
“Excellent customer service. Had an issue with a raspberry pi case that I had ordered but couldn't assemble correctly, and didn't even contact them for support, but they emailed me and helped me resolve the issue.”
“The amount and design of accessoires they have for the Raspberry Pi is really great. Packaging is nicely done and comes without damaging. Also, shipment to my address only took 1-3 business days which is muh faster than other webshops I've previously ordered.”
