A lot of the exam questions were 'fill in the blank' in a sentence. This type of question can easily be guessed by just looking at the grammar of the sentence and requires absolutely no knowledge of the subject. Ie from the four options, often only one of the words makes grammatical sense in that sentence so that has to be the right answer. You could easily pass the exam without understanding any of the content of the course. Disappointed- with the cost of the course I would have expected stronger assessment methods.

Many thanks for your feedback. The question bank in that course is set by IOSH (the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health) and so they are not within our direct control. The questions used during the assessment are selected at random from that question bank. We’ve looked at a sample of recent assessments and found that, on average, that type of question appeared about 5 to 15% of the time. Of course, by the nature of selecting questions randomly, you may have had more than the average number. We will however pass your comments on to IOSH.

There needs to be a better process of printing of the presentation slides. not being able to print them off made it difficult to make notes.

Many thanks for your feedback Wilson. It is actually a requirement placed on us by IOSH not to provide a copy of the slides. As we understand it there are two reasons for this: One is to avoid students simply printing it off and using it as reference during the exam and the second was to help the student to develop the skill of taking in the information provided and using hand written notes to decide on the key points being made. So as it stands we are unable to do as you ask, but given your comments we will keep it under review with IOSH and will do so if it becomes permissible in the future.

Unfortunately I did not find the course a good learning exercise. There are too many cross overs with CSCS. The presentation format was basic, slow and slide transitions tedious. In the course, too many questions relating to non-useful facts were asked with all answers seemingly plausible (e.g. how many deaths from falls from height last year 5, 10 or 15). What is the point in this as a question when all results are sensible answers?

Many thanks for your feedback. This is the first 2 star review that we have received. (Our current average is 4.85 out of 5, achieved across 1183 reviews.) So we take your comments very seriously and would like to understand more about them. If you could contact us at tutors@hsqe.co.uk or 0333 733 1111 we would really appreciate it. To answer some of the points you raise: (1) We publish our course content on our website and in our training catalogue. As such, you should have been able to see in advance of booking the course that the content is similar to what is covered in SMSTS. But we will look at how we can make the course content stand out more. (2) The manner of course delivery is a difficult one for us, because the vast majority of our feedback suggests that people like the simplicity of the user interface, so we do not propose to change that. (3) We only use transitions where needed to distinguish one section from another. 90% of transition times are 2 seconds in duration. The remaining 10% are 3-4 seconds. We cannot do much about the 2 second transitions, as to go quicker would make distinguishing sections difficult for users to spot. We can, and will, however look at changing the 3-4 second transitions in light of your feedback. (4) Again, the asking of questions during the course is a difficult one for us, as other feedback suggests people like that because it helps to put the content in perspective and adds depth to people’s understanding. As stated earlier, we’d really appreciate it if you could get in contact with us so that we can understand a bit more about your feedback.
