About Friars.co.uk:

It all started back in 1927 when William Long had the fabulous idea of opening a luxury chocolate shop in the picturesque town of Keswick, in the heart of the Lake District. He probably never dreamed it would still be in the same family nearly 100 years later.

In those early days the shop only opened during the summer months and it is believed William chose to winter in the Madeira sunshine. As you would expect the business has evolved in many ways since then, however certain principles remain since those early days.

Innovation – We were the first to make a prosecco truffle and then shortly after we followed with our fabulous gin truffle. More recently; although Easter eggs are synonymous with Easter, we decided to move away from the main stream and invented our famous hot cross bun truffle.

But all this only scratches the surface; we are also one of the first chocolate makers to start transitioning to 100% biodegrade packagingM as well as pioneering vegan milk and white chocolate...among other things.

Quality – Any new chocolate must meet certain requirements to get past our strict tasting panel. If one of the panel gives a score below 9/10 then we simply won’t offer the chocolate to our customers.

Longevity – We are immensely proud of our historic routes and in this fast moving, ever changing world, we take pride in our tradition and heritage. Our rose and violet creams are the same ones that William sold on that first day of opening, back in 1927. We have survived and prospered over the last 90 years and with the launch of our Ambleside store and an online service, we fully intend to be around for the next 100 years.

After all life is too short, so why settle for ordinary chocolate?

I placed an order for a box of chocolates for my wife as a Valentines Day present as I was due to be away at sea with the Royal Navy on the 14 February and wanted to get her something nice. I placed the order on the 4th February and later that day I received an email saying my order had been dispatched. It is now the 13th February and nothing has yet been delivered to my wife.

Impossible to order. Paying by PayPal. Screen displays ‘Incorrect phone number’. Phone number not requested, how can it be invalid? Lots of other online chocs sellers, forget this one, it has a hopeless website.

After checking addresses for invoice and deliverey by myself, the package arrived at the invoice address and as it was supposed to go to Largs in Scotland it arrived in Leighton Buzzard Bedfordshire. Not helpful. Wont be chansing an order with you again.

Ordered some Christmas gift for the family received the wrong order. Then it was to late for you to get another order to me in time. Also now I have got to go the trouble of returning the box of chocolate you sent by mistake 😕

I ordered a box of chocolates for a friend on Friday 17 December, and paid for "next-day delivery". When they weren't delivered, I was told that I had ordered them at 15:05 and next-day delivery only applies to orders placed before 15:00. Also, there are no deliveries at weekends. It's now 22 December, and I have received an email that the chocolates may be delivered today. What a shambles. My advice - order with a company that actually knows how to do next-day delivery.

Hi Stephen, Our next day delivery service has a cut off of 3pm. Particularly at busy times, we have to stick to this. We state at check out that next day delivery is the next working day. Unfortunately, sometimes our delivery partners fail to deliver as promised. This seems to have happened in your case, as a result, we have refunded your delivery charge. My selection was a great disappointment. The chocolates were very small and unattractive. I didn't realise that a 'bundle' would mean that no decorative presentation would be supplied. They were also overpriced.

Total order was around £150 I sent this to customer services yesterday expecting a reply today but got nothing. Received my order and I was a little disappointed, firstly the box it was delivered in was soft flimsy and felt really damp and bashed. It’s was only bashed due to insufficient box being used, it was twice as big as it needed to be and everything inside was just rattling around like a marble in a biscuit tin, Don’t know why the flimsy box was so damp, I would never send a customer anything in a box like that, bare in mind this had 2 wine hamper boxes in it, no fragile or this way up marking so it’s just been tossed about like an empty crisp packet in the wind, Contents - chocolates look as good as always, disappointed to see short dates on the chocolates, these are all gifts for Christmas, mum can’t eat a lot of chocolate and these will need to last longer than the dates on them, not great when these are as much as £1 per chocolate, The wine and chocolate gifts are for clients, I bought these last year, although this year the boxes are not as nice quality and feel cheap and flimsy and also damp, opened one up and there’s an old screwed up piece paper inside with chocolates sitting at an angle as they don’t fit the box properly, that will be why the box had a line down the middle from being tossed around. Can’t see me buying these again, there were expensive for what they were before but least you could feel the quality in the package box, now it’s like cost cutting has taken over, cutting corners right left and centre, not impressed in the slightest I’m afraid

Not as described...was not personalised...a label stuck on a friars card and even that was upside down...IF AN ITEM IS PERSONALISED THEN IT SHOULD BE IN THE ITEM. VERY UNHAPPY

The ordering process for next day deliveries is not clear at all. Apparently no one is able to wrap label and send a parcel by Royal Mail after 3pm. It’s not like they make the chocolates to order. If it said order before 3 I would not have ordered and will it order again. The surprise meant for office workers on a Friday, was not delivered until Monday, because I was silly enough to think that ordering at 3.44 pm was plenty of time to get next day delivery. I have recently had to send stuff over night and as late as 5.30 was still sufficient. It wouldn’t let me give no stars.

Thank you for your review and sorry for any disappointment caused. Unfortunately it does state on our website that the cut off time for next day deliveries is 3pm and also in our terms and conditions and the order page. Unfortunately there has to be a cut off point for the Royal Mail collections.

I bought a number of chocolate boxes for Christmas as they had a great reduction due to” overstocking”. Once they arrived, it was clear they were reduced because they only had one more month before their dates expired. I feel cheated and very disappointed. Will not be buying from Friars again.

The ordering process and communication were good. The chocolates looked delightful and were well packaged. That is as far as it goes since the flavour of the coffee selection was awful. As a lover of coffee chocolates I was delighted to find an entire box of exquisite looking coffee chocolates but oh so disappointed at the unpleasant taste of each of the varieties. It’s actually put me off trying any of the other varieties of Friars chocolates.

On 28th July 2021 Purchased 14 packs of Truffles for a Special Occasion and was sorely disappointed to find the Best Before Date on 7 of the products expired End of August 2021. This makes me feel, product will not be at their freshest.
