About Friars.co.uk:

It all started back in 1927 when William Long had the fabulous idea of opening a luxury chocolate shop in the picturesque town of Keswick, in the heart of the Lake District. He probably never dreamed it would still be in the same family nearly 100 years later.

In those early days the shop only opened during the summer months and it is believed William chose to winter in the Madeira sunshine. As you would expect the business has evolved in many ways since then, however certain principles remain since those early days.

Innovation – We were the first to make a prosecco truffle and then shortly after we followed with our fabulous gin truffle. More recently; although Easter eggs are synonymous with Easter, we decided to move away from the main stream and invented our famous hot cross bun truffle.

But all this only scratches the surface; we are also one of the first chocolate makers to start transitioning to 100% biodegrade packagingM as well as pioneering vegan milk and white chocolate...among other things.

Quality – Any new chocolate must meet certain requirements to get past our strict tasting panel. If one of the panel gives a score below 9/10 then we simply won’t offer the chocolate to our customers.

Longevity – We are immensely proud of our historic routes and in this fast moving, ever changing world, we take pride in our tradition and heritage. Our rose and violet creams are the same ones that William sold on that first day of opening, back in 1927. We have survived and prospered over the last 90 years and with the launch of our Ambleside store and an online service, we fully intend to be around for the next 100 years.

After all life is too short, so why settle for ordinary chocolate?

I received notification that my order was coming, but when it arrived it was a tiny box containing a fraction of the goods ordered. I sent 2 e-mails which were returned because the mail box was full. I have still not heard back about the missing chocolates.

Unfortunately, I was very disappointed with my order. The lemon cheesecake chocolates, did not taste of lemon at all, and were just a very thick, overly sweet cream filling, and really not nice at all. The chocolate itself was very thick and much to sweet for me personally. I expected the chocolate football kit, to be in nicer packaging, as it was to be a Christmas gift, and with the Friars logo on the box. I actually thought it looked like something you could have purchased in Poundland, and am to embarrassed to give it as a Christmas gift for that reason.

Despite an e mail I still have not had my chocolates!! Very unimpressed especially as this is the first time I have bought your chocolates!!

Thank you for your review, We are sorry to hear that you haven't recevied your order, this is due to the strikes by Royal Mail, unfortunatley there have been two 2 day strikes in close proximity which has caused further delays. We did include information regarding the strike action and potential delays on our website when ordering. They are back working tomorrow so your order should make its way through their sorting office. Incorrect address given to delivery company. Numerous emails to Friars and even a call with delivery company ended in incorrect delivery address again. Very disappointing as paid for next day delivery as it was a gift. Saying all of the above, Friars were responsive and refunded in a very timely manner.

The chocolates arrived on time but were very badly melted. As I have received earlier orders in perfect condition I did not complain expecting this to be an unfortunate one off

Well packaged and delivered promptly. However, best before date of 6/22 for an order received in June is very poor. Oranges themselves were very sticky and wet with syrup and tasteless. Wouldn’t order again, and would be mortified if I had given as a gift with such a ridiculous BBE date.

The selection of dietary requirement isn't intuitive, I selected dairy free and gluten free assuming that the website would only show me products that were free of both but instead it showed me all products that were either dairy or gluten free which wasn't clear. The chocolates weren't cheap so it was a slight waste of a birthday present as I ended up getting ones that were only dairy free. When I raised the issue with customer service they refused to acknowledge the confusion this causes or that anything should be improved on the website which is disappointing. Chocolates themselves are no doubt good quality but unfortunately because of this experience and unclear selection process I'll take my business elsewhere. Not the best customer service...

These were presents for a friend. There was a chocolate missing from the rum truffles box and the assorted box tasted stale. They were all thrown away.

I thought the chocolate was very similar to the much cheaper supermarket free from chocolate. I was gutted to have spent so much money on something that was so low in quality. The packaging was beautiful though.

This company relies on Royal Mail. So stressed awaiting present to give. Offered my postage back for very late delivery, as yet to arrive! Very poor service. Need to use another carrier. Do not pay for next day delivery. Do not anticipate fulfilling birthday gift. Living in the countryside one cannot easily replace with sudden shop purchase.

Alcohol flavours were over-powering. The box was not sold as liquer chocolates, but the majority of the chocolates were. (11/24 didn't contain alcohol). If bought these chocolates as a valentine's gift because they were regarded as good quality chocolates, but honestly I could only find one or two chocolates within the box which actually tastes ok. I also emailed the company direct to tell them how disappointed we were, and asked which chocolates had alcohol in as they were not labeled and they only replied to tell us which chocolates had alcohol in, but ignored the comment about our dissatisfaction.

Although this chocolate box is not listed as a liqueur box on our website alcohol is included in the ingredients both as a flavouring and as a preservative and the 'contains alcohol' box is ticked in the allergen and dietary guide.
