“I think it's really great but I skipped the last 2 boxes, because I think it's starting to be more of the same. And especially just a box of pencils will not get me excited to pay such a big amount of money. I still like the lino box the most, because that was truly something different than painting or drawing. I like this subscription so I can try things that are totally new, but painting with watercolor or gouache doesn't seem that different to me.”

“I received the watercolour box as a gift. The supplies are reasonable quality, but overall I'm afraid it was pretty disappointing. Most of my experience is with oils and pastels; I haven't worked much with watercolour paint. I was interested to try it, and initially pleased to have the booklet that came with the box, however when you look inside the 100+ page booklet it turns out only to have around 8 pages of basic instructions exploring the medium. The remainder is a few paint-by-numbers style tutorials for specific pictures that the curators thought looked nice, and whatever the artist version of Heat magazine would be. I don't think I've learned much from it. Fortunately there are plenty of other resources to learn the medium, and I'll probably make use of the paint and paper itself. For learning though, you're better off picking your own cheap paint set and messing around a bit with it to get used to it than you are paying for this. Unfortunately for me personally, I have another three boxes coming from the gift subscription, so I hope things improve!”

“A couple of the boxes are lacking in inspiration eg pens and pencils. Art is a lot wider than 2D. The delays in boxes, twice now, is frustrating for something that only comes to us four times a year. You need to consider tempting people to retain their subscription if this kind of situation continues. I would also prefer you moved back to high quality known brands. We have no benchmark for your own brand.”

“Artful is a great way of learning about art, trying new techniques, with a support system in the form of the book in the box, Youtube tutorials, an Instagram community and prompts, etc. The supplies are good quality and you get a full kit including most of what you need. Techniques vary from traditional art such as watercolour to more crafty/design stuff such as screen printing and lino. I think I preferred the Jamie-style longer, more detailed, Youtube tutorials, but I acknowledge that not everybody will feel that way.”

“I bought two subscriptions and the first boxes were amazing. The second box one was perfect the other missing half the items. I have contacted artful with no reply and tried calling but they have an outgoing message saying they are not taking calls. Really poor after sales customer service detracts from just brilliant concept and quality of first boxes! I hope they respond soon as both were gift subscriptions for Christmas and is a really poor show!”

“Overpriced and underwhelming. Other subscription boxes offer far greater value and products. Artful's justification for their inflated price is the lengthy magazine included so if you're after an expensive art mag subscription then maybe this is for you. They also sell this as having access to skill share and online tutorial videos- after searching high and low and even emailing to ask how to access skillshare I received no answer. The YouTube videos consist of 3 5min videos so again hardly justified.”

The 3 months free trial to Skillshare was exclusive to edition one, this was the first box available back in March 2020. The team work extremely hard on each box to ensure subscribers received a variety of high valued art supplies, along with a very detailed magazine. Within the price paid, subscribers also have access to online monthly tutorials, to help build confidence and skills with the suppliers within the boxes. “The Artful boxes are a great way to try an artistic medium that you might not have used before, or have a limited understanding of. The box contents are always top notch and worth more than the price of the actual box, the accompanying magazine is interesting and informative and the tutorial videos each month are very helpful. “The Artful subscription box is carefully curated with the highest quality products and ongoing access to tutorials. One of my favourite parts of the Artful box is being introduced to all kinds of incredible artists who use a range of techniques. The delivery costs are a bit high for me as someone living in Canada, but have paying full annual cost has helped reduce that cost. I look forward to receiving the box every quarter and my learning about art techniques continues to grow with the each Artful box.”

“I loved every box I've got. Materials are always very good and right for beginners. My only issues are that in every box we always get the same 4 greeting cards and basic stationary that you can easily find in every house or in every stationary shop (without paying any shipment, that here in Italy gets to 10€, and leaves me a damaged box almost everytime).”

“I love artful! It started out as a way to get back into art during lockdown and now it’s a must have for me. Each box is beautifully designed and you can tell so much thought goes into the magazine and the quality of the tools and materials provided every time. It’s great to experience different mediums and having/storing everything you need in one box means you can pick up and start any edition right away.”

“I LOVE the materials, the magazine is great- so is the extension pack. The only reason I can't five it a 5 is the delay 2 months in a row- when both are gifts. Disappointing and the alternative isn't an improvement for a regular subscriber- there is npthing to change it to that is new.”

“I love the quality and the variety of the supplies. Unfortunately, as would be expected, some boxes are of much more interest to me than others. I would be very interested in tiered skill level boxes where if you weren’t interested in the newest box you could choose to select an intermediate or advanced level box in a previous medium like soft pastel or watercolor.”

“I’ve been a subscriber for 6 boxes to date (March 2022) and I’ve loved all of them. Each box has high quality art supplies (branded under the Artful name) based on a different product - eg: watercolour, pastels, ink etc. It comes with a well written magazine full of ideas, articles & tutorials, which are backed up by YouTube videos. The tutorials are focused mainly on the new artist, but there’s something there for everyone. Highly recommend.”

“I’ve been subscribed to artfulbox since they started shipping internationally and have always been impressed with the variety of products and the amazing magazine (the most magical and engrossing part for me). Yesterday I received the latest box, about soft pastels, and what should have been a happy unboxing turned rather sour. Initially I was very impressed with the boxart and the packaging, it seems they have opted for recycled paper rather than the shiny white they used in previous boxes. However, the magazine is utterly disappointing and ruined the overall experience. Pastels can be a very intimidating medium and the box includes many different materials. But the magazine does not explain how to use any of the supplies that came with the pastels, even the basic explanation on using pastels is very lacking. Furthermore there was no feature on how the boxart was made, which is a letdown, as it was always interesting to see the process. Not to mention, the boxart is stunning and I would have loved to see the steps. The tutorials in the magazine are another sore point as 2 of them are done by Lewis. I understand the company wanted to hire someone to push out regular tutorials of a beginner level to make the product more marketable and accessible. But this ruins another magical aspect of the magazine. Both his tutorials show one technique and are of a basic level. Previous magazines had amazing tutorials ranging in skill and showing vastly different techniques. And finally, the magazine is filled with way more advertisements than usual, taking away from the experience even more. Before, I wanted to display these magazines on a bookshelf as works of art, this one can honestly go in the trash.”

We're incredibly proud of the magazine that accompanies every subscription box. We aim to deliver tutorials that accommodate varying levels of ability because accessibility is very important to us. Ultimately, we want to produce something that can be enjoyed by all. We're passionate about sustainability so have been and continue to work very hard on all aspects of the packaging as we play our part in a circular economy. “I love love love artful! I've always been really passionate and creative but also with little time, or know-how (largely self-taught). It's like Christmas each time a box arrives, even when it's with mediums I'm already familiar with, it at least means I can stock up on fresh, good quality kit. Having the kits arrive inspire me to get creative again. I'll be taking the watercolour set on my honeymoon with me as it's travel size and I can not wait!”
