My husband and I watch this film on a pretty regular basis as it is always guaranteed to make us laugh.
'Van Wilder: Party Liaison' is from the makers of National Lampoon. It's the hilarious story of a college student called Van Wilder [played by Ryan Reynolds] who seems intent upon remaning a student forever. He's been at Coolidge College for 7 years so far and why should anything change? He's having a whale of a time and is most definitely the big man on campus. Van even he has his own personal assistant, Taj [Kal Penn], to help organise his activities [none of which seem to involve going to class]. Everything is going swimmingly until Van's father decides that after playing 7 years worth of tuition fees, he's had enough. How is Van going to find the money to stay in school? Why, by using all his social contacts to become a party planner that's how! Van is such a legend that Gwen Pearson [a reporter for the college newspaper, played by Tara Reid] is told to write an article on Van which will make front cover of the graduation issue. Van falls for Gwen immediately, but can he win her over and will she give up DIK Richard for Van? What will Richard do when he discovers that Van has designs on his girlfriend? And, most importantly, why is Van so desperate to stay in college when there is a whole world out there just waiting for him to explore? Ryan Reynolds is very funny as Van, but his acting is hardly original, he's the same in pretty much everything I've seen him in. For me the film is made by Kal Penn as Taj, Van's assistant from Banglapor who has come to Amercia to learn 'the great American art of muff-diving'. He's had little success so far but will his fortunes change when Van gives him a helping hand? The soundtrack is fantastic, particularly the 'Jimmy Eat World' track. Real American cheerful music to do the cleaning to! Heavy on the drums and guitar! This is a single disc DVD with a running time of 89 minutes. It is certified 15. The DVD extras include interviews [which are nothing special] and some quite amusing deleted scenes. I would thoroughly recommend this film to anyone who enjoyed American Pie or Eurotrip. There are some fantastic one-liners and slap-stick humour as well as some truly disgusting, but hilarious scenes, which make you cring with the sheer awfulness of what is on your screen!
