Pearl Jam - Ten (Remix)
By jamesmoz

2009
In 1991, Pearl Jam released their debut album 'Ten'. Dismissed by critics and Kurt Cobain as corporate rock at its worst, the record went on to be one of the biggest selling albums of all time. And now, 18 years later, is a reissued, remixed version - so how does it rate nearly 20 years later?
The answer is simple. If you weren't a fan then, you won't be a fan now. If you are a fan, then this is a vital purchase. The remix is subtle, bringing singer Eddie Vedder's vocals forward and reducing the rather dated sounding reverb on the guitars (the original mix also comes as part of the 2CD version, so you can compare the two.) The songs are still as powerful as they were, with the likes of Alive, Evenflow and Why Go erupting from the speakers, and the quieter ballads like Black and Release sounding fresher than ever. Vedder's vocals still soar with a power that has been much imitated but never bettered.
The extra features are a bit more of a mixed bag. Outtakes 'Evil Little Goat' and '2000 Mile an Hour Blues' are as bad as their names, whilst 'State of Love and Trust' is no where near as good as the version available on 'Rearviewmirror', the 2003 Greatest Hits collection. A DVD of the MTV Unplugged performance also comes with the package, which is enjoyable if slightly dated.
So all in all it is a classic album which has been fairly randomly tweaked and re-released. I'm much more interested in what their new album will be like...
