Ice Age DVD

An Ice Age has taken over and everything is migrating south. Everyone that is except for a mammoth, a sloth and a sabre tooth tiger who experience the adventure of their lives whilst reuniting a baby boy with his father.

The story begins with an ice age tribe preparing to move the village to warmer climes However, they are being watched by Soto, a sabre toothed tiger who lost several of his pack when they were attacked by the villagers. He plans to get his revenge by stealing and killing the baby of the village.

Soto sends Diego, his second in charge, to steal the baby but Diego fails as the baby?s mother jumps off a cliff into a waterfall with the child. She dies but manages to save the baby and hands him to Manfred and Sid.

Sid is a Sloth whose family desert him when they move south. He is saved by Manfred, a mammoth, when he annoys two rhinos and decides that Manfred is his new best friend. A relationship which bears a striking resemblance to Shrek and Donkey!

Sid wants to return the baby to the villagers but Manfred is not so sure, it?s only when they meet Diego and Manfred realises that he?s up to something that Manfred agrees to help Sid. Diego offers to help them track down the villagers. Manfred is suspicious but decides it?s safer to keep his enemy close. Voila, you have the strangest herd in the Ice Age!

The animation, whilst good, is not, I feel, up to the standards of some of the top quality Disneys, such as Beauty and the Beast. However, it does get a bonus point for not allowing its characters to burst into song every five minutes.

The squirrel with its nut which featured on the trailers is very good. Small scenes with him run throughout and are well worth watching out for.

Sid the Sloth is hysterical and there are some very funny scenes with the baby [a couple of very cutesy moments such as those with Boo in Monsters Inc], but there are also some sad, poignant scenes, such as when we find
out Manfred?s history and when the baby?s father is searching for his wife and son.

All in all, this is not a fantastic film, but it is entertaining and kids should enjoy as well as cartoon lovers.
