Room For Improvement

Having finally said goodbye to my 3G iPod, I went through the same mental shenanigans of scanning the market (like last time) before eventually settling on an iPod (like last time). This cost me £159 from Amazon, which is only £20 more than I paid for a 20GB iPod three or four years ago, so in terms of “bang for your buck” it compares very well.

For the iPod aficionado, there are some key observations. Firstly, the response of the wheel is much clunkier, and there is a lot more clicking from the hard drive than I remember from the old one. This is immensely frustrating and is akin to the mouse on your computer jumping around inanely.

Once I got over this (which I hope will be fixed with a software update), I have found the rest of it pretty flawless. The coverflow feature wore off very wuickly, but seeing the album covers helps with reference, and gives the whole thing a bit of life. The sound quality is fine, and all my old peripherals fit, apart from the iSkin.

All in all, you can see where improvements can be made, but it still looks and feels great. And it works…

Initially I owned the original IPOD shuffle 512mb which was fine for going to the gym and back and forward for university. However when travelling I got immensely bored and needed more songs and the possibility of watching films.

Originally, I had thought about purchasing a portable dvd player but the battery life wasn't adequate. Then I noticed the Ipod video.

Those of you used to the Nano or the Shuffle are going to find this quite chunky in comparison but believe me the size matters.

For your money you get a 1.5" screen and incredible picture quality. Recently I went on holiday and took this with me on the train and you'll be amazed at the quality of picture and sound you get from this tiny object. It was so good that my boyfriend stole an earphone and watched it with me.

I have a total of 5 movies and a few hundred songs and i've nowhere near filled the 80gb hard drive that the IPOD Video boasts.

I happened to get this one for my birthday so I didn't pay for it. Would I have paid £150 for it. Yes. This is a fantastic product.

Drawbacks:

The menus are a bit fiddly but once you get used to the controls its a piece of cake.

Who should buy it?

Everyone, whether its for yourself or a younger child (10 and up) this will keep you entertained on the long and short journeys. I wouldn't reccommend buying it for a really young child purely because I could see them breaking it or finding it difficult to navigate. However if you put their favourite tv shows on it, it would be great for them with supervision.

Still not sure?

Go into a few retailers that have them on display and have a go browsing the menus and sample files. Once you've tried it you'll love it.
