A beat-em up with a story

I had read several reviews of this game before I purchased it myself and none of them really gave the game the credit it deserved. First off - the bad points - gameplay can become a bit tedious. Unfortunately it's the same thing over and over. However, if you like beat-em ups or hack and slash kind of games then this is for you.

Someone pointed out that the character spoke English throughout the game even though she's meant to be Japanese. Well, I'd just like to illustrate that if she spoke Japanese then we english speaking folks wouldn't understand her now would we.

So what's it about?

A sword funnily enough. There's a tribe that the main character belongs to that has protected the sword for centuries in hope that some deity would come down from the heavens to weild it and lay waste to their enemies. Nariko's (the main character) father isn't a very nice guy to her. The prophecy says that a man should weild the sword but Nariko was born instead and so her father and the rest of her tribe considered her a bit of a curse. You start off at the end of the game and basically find out how she gets to that point.

Gameplay:

Quite hack and slash beat em up sort of thing. Though there is some puzzle solving. You do at times take over another (quite annoying) character called Kai. Her job is to shoot people with arrows. It's great once you get the hang of it but incredibly frustrating until you do.

Cool stuff:

Slow motion guided arrow. You control where the arrows go in slow motion by tilting the controller. It's great fun when you get the hang of it. Combo's are easy to pull off and cinematic to watch. They are brilliantly entertaining and satisfying during a difficult battle. It's like when guys watch football and their team scores, you'll find yourself behaving this way when you win a difficult battle.

Overall:

Cheesy but good storyline. Brilliant graphics. Not quite 100% pick up and play but like I said, once you get the hang of guided arrow its a walk in the park. Definately worth buying but due to some of the language and inuendos probably not best for those under the age restriction.

It looks and sounds stunning but does this hack and slash for PS3 have any real depth?
