With detailed graphics combined with an epic storyline, Broken Sword is the first of a trilogy, but easily surpasses the other two. As a point and click role play adventure, the gamer undertakes the character of George Stobbart. With excellent writing and a charismatic voiceover, George's dry wit is enough to provide at least half the entertainment as he humourously outwits and swindles his way out of several compromising situations. Collecting clues across a variety of locations and crossing paths with over a hundred eccentric characters, the game never becomes repetative or dull.
The story opens at a Parisian restaurant where our American hero George Stobbart is caught in a suspicious explosion that sets off a chain of events that embroils him in a quest to uncover the identity of a jester assassin. Picking up clues as well as collecting random objects for future use, the game appeals would-be-sleuths of all ages.
The graphics are 2D and on first glance this may seem old fashioned. However, the cartoon-like quality and the detail within the pictures adds to the charm and makes for more straightforward game playing.
Of all point and click adventures, Broken Sword: Shadow Of The Templars is superior in its use of innovative puzzles, clever dialogue and master storytelling.
